Tenancy Sustainment service

We offer short-term support to help people in rented accommodation maintain their tenancy.

Our Tenancy Sustainment service can help you if you are:

  • a council tenant aged 18 to 65 with multiple needs and are having difficulty maintaining your tenancy
  • a council tenant or licencee who needs help with budgeting, reducing debt or maximising income
  • a new tenant who needs support to set up a tenancy
  • a tenant in private rented accommodation and are at risk of losing your tenancy
  • a tenant who needs support with your Universal Credit claim

Our housing officers can refer you to the service if you meet any of the above criteria. You cannot self-refer to the service. When our caseloads are full, we prioritise referrals.

Available support

The support we provide will help you develop the skills you need to manage your tenancy yourself. It is designed to be short-term help rather than ongoing support.

We can support you to:

  • establish your new tenancy, for example by helping you set up utilities or find furniture
  • understand and comply with your tenancy agreement, and be aware of your rights
  • manage your finances, for example by helping you to budget, apply for benefits or set up a repayment plan
  • access specialist and community support such as fire assessments or adult social care
  • understand health and safety related issues impacting your tenancy
  • improve the condition of your property, for example by helping you organise repairs or specialist cleaning
  • move home or downsize, for example by helping with applications
  • work with your private landlord and neighbours to ensure the best possible outcomes for you
  • find employment, education, training or volunteering opportunities

Contact us to find out more about how we can help you and whether you are eligible for a referral to the service.
