Take over a council tenancy

When a sole council tenant dies, it might be possible for a partner or a close relative to succeed the tenancy, or take it over.

We only allow this to happen once in the lifetime of a secure tenancy.

Our Succession Policy [PDF, 66Kb] explains our position on inheriting tenancies in more detail.

If you think you are eligible to succeed a tenancy, complete our online form to apply:

If you succeed to a property larger than your needs, you will be required to move to a smaller property as soon as possible.
