‘Play streets’ are neighbour-led temporary road closures to create a safe space for children to play outside their homes. Playing Out explains more about the idea and its benefits.
Play streets have been organised all around the country and we can support you to set them up in your local community.
To arrange a play street, you’ll need to:
- talk to your neighbours
- get permission and support
- tell everyone
- play out
Playing Out’s guide to play streets in four simple steps goes into more detail and provides useful templates for posters, risk assessment and more.
Road closures
Not all events need an official road closure, but if you want to play on your street you should apply for a closure to ensure safety at regular events.
You’ll need to apply for a road closure for your play street event. This is managed by Cambridgeshire County Council.
Support
Tell us if you are thinking of setting up a play street or planning a one-off event. We can support your application and answer any questions you have.
We also have a limited number of kits we can lend you if you want to try running an event, including tabards and signage.
The Playing Out Cambridge group on Facebook can also help if you have any questions.
