Civic events to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day in Cambridge

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Cambridge will be representing Cambridge at events to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day this year.

On Sunday 9 November shortly before 11am, the Mayor of Cambridge, Cllr Dinah Pounds, will meet and greet veterans and military personnel prior to a parade to the war memorial on Hills Road.

Accompanied by the Deputy Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire Mr James Hutt, Daniel Zeichner MP, Cambridge City Council Leader Cllr Cameron Holloway, Cambridgeshire County Council Chair Cllr Peter McDonald and the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University Prof. Laurie Butler – as well as representatives from the Armed Forces, Police and Royal British Legion – Mayor Pounds will then take part in a commemorative service at the memorial where wreaths will be laid.

At the same time, the Deputy Mayor of Cambridge, Cllr Richard Swift, will join a procession to the annual service of remembrance at Great St Mary’s Church. Residents can listen to live coverage of this from 10.30am on Cambridge Radio.

Both services will pause at 11am for two minutes’ silence which will be observed across the country.

Additionally, on Tuesday 11 November, a two-minute silence will be observed outside the Guildhall at 11am to commemorate Armistice Day. This will include Cllr Russ McPherson playing a short piece on bagpipes from the balcony of the Guildhall.

Cllr Dinah Pounds, Mayor of Cambridge, said: “Remembrance Day is a time to honour and remember those who made sacrifices and to reflect on the lessons of the past.

“This year we have held some very special commemorations in Cambridge. It is 80 years since VE day when we remembered the end of conflict in Europe after the Second World War and VJ day which marked the end of WW2 conflict in the Far East. This year, we also remembered the people of Nagasaki and Hiroshima whose cities were devastated by atomic bombs.

“Remembrance Day is also a time to remember all those who have been affected and continue to be affected by war and conflict across the world today.

“It is a privilege to be representing Cambridge on such an important day as we come together as a city and as a country in remembrance.”
