Thursday 8 May will mark 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day, when the Second World War came to an end in Europe.
The 80th anniversary of VE Day is a time to together to learn about the stories of those that served and the VE Day generation.
Communities are welcome to come together and celebrate the day by hosting local events in their neighbourhoods. This celebration could be a picnic, a street party, a neighbourhood lunch, sharing stories or just a moment to reflect as a community.
These events can take place on the weekend before VE Day (3, and 4 May), including bank holiday Monday (5 May), or the weekend after (10 and 11 May) depending on which day best works for the community.
The council’s Community Development Officers will be available to help with event planning and organising if required. You can request support by emailing: communitydevelopment@cambridge.gov.uk
Communities and resident groups are welcome to host small events in local community centres or on your local park. Get in touch with your local Community Development Officer if you would like support to book a venue.
If you wish to invite the Mayor to attend you can make a request. The Mayor’s calendar is often busy, so it may be difficult to accommodate all of the requests that the Mayor may receive.
An information pack full of advice, guidance and templates is available to support communities creating events. It's really easy to get started. Download the pack here.
