Plans to relocate Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant approved by Secretary of State

Anglian Water's Development Consent Order (DCO) to permit the relocation of its Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) has been approved by the Secretary of State.

Under the plans the existing site on Cowley Road in Cambridge would move to a new site between Horningsea, Fen Ditton and Stow Cum Quy, next to the A14 in South Cambridgeshire.

As a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is responsible for considering the application (rather than Greater Cambridge Shared Planning, which is the shared planning service for Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District councils, or Cambridgeshire County Council as the waste planning authority).

The Secretary of State granted the DCO on 8 April 2025, having considered that the relocation of the existing WWTP would unlock a long-held ambition to redevelop North East Cambridge and enable the delivery of thousands of new homes and new jobs in a highly sustainable location.

Greater Cambridge Shared Planning officers will now be engaging with the applicants on their next steps for the redevelopment of the site.
