111,646 pieces of litter have been recorded as binned in Cambridge this year using the LitterLotto app – a partnership scheme Cambridge City Council signed up to in November 2023.
The council launched the campaign to encourage residents and visitors to put their rubbish in the recycling bins instead of littering when they are out and about in Cambridge.
As a result of the success of this campaign, the council will be renewing its partnership with the LitterLotto for a second year.
Using the app, participants are able to submit a photo of themselves binning rubbish and are automatically enrolled into a monthly prize draw where they could win £100 funded by fixed penalty notices or a £50 Love Cambridge gift card provided by the Cambridge BID. Every month two winners are selected.
Participants are also entered into the national prize draws managed by LitterLotto, offering a range of other prizes, including a £1000 jackpot.
Cllr Martin Smart, Executive Councillor for Open Spaces and City Services, said “It is great that so many people are taking part in the LitterLotto and taking pride in keeping the city clean. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in helping to clean up the city.
“Despite the great results and the incentives, there are still some that choose to litter. This behaviour is unacceptable – cleaning up litter costs the council money that could be used on other services that offer real benefits to the community. I hope that with more of us binning our rubbish that we continue to demonstrate that as a community we won’t tolerate littering.
“It is important that we take pride in the city we live and work in. LitterLotto is a fun way to do that, and you can even get your family involved. If you haven’t already, make sure you download the app – who knows, you might win.”
David Landsberg, founder and CEO of LitterLotto, said: “We’re proud to partner with Cambridge City Council to inspire cleaner public spaces through engaging incentives that make binning litter rewarding. Working together really is making a difference - let’s keep binning and keep your neighbourhood free of litter.”
Becky Burrell, Director of Operation and Development at Cambridge BID said: “Cambridge BID have been supporting the LitterLotto campaign as we feel it is important to encourage people to dispose of their litter responsibly. The initiative supports the work that we do to ensure Cambridge is a nice place to live, visit or work. We all need to take pride in our city, and this project is one way to reward those that work hard to look after Cambridge. The figures are impressive, but there is always more we as a city can do.”
