Government removes Best Value Notice given to South Cambridgeshire District Council for four-day week arrangements

The Government has removed a Best Value Notice that was given to South Cambridgeshire District Council for its four-day week working arrangements.

As South Cambridgeshire District and Cambridge City councils share important services such as waste and planning, we have published below the link to South Cambridgeshire District Council's press release on this topic.

Government recognises Council’s ‘constructive engagement’ as Best Value Notice expires

Cllr Mike Davey, Leader of Cambridge City Council, said: “We share a number of services with South Cambridgeshire District Council, including waste and planning, and have supported their trial of a four-day week from the outset as they have worked to find solutions to the recruitment and retention challenges being experienced by councils across the country.

“We’ve always said that the most important factor for us is ensuring that services for our residents continue to be delivered reliably and to a high standard. During the trial we’ve seen the intended benefits to recruitment and retention play out, with improvements being made to service delivery in many areas, along with savings being made on staffing costs as a result of permanently filling hard to fill roles previously delivered by more expensive agency staff.

“It’s absolutely right that the new Government has made it clear that, as independent employers, decisions about how to manage the workforce and deliver essential services to a high standard are the responsibility of local councils. We look forward to working with South Cambridgeshire District Council as they consider their next steps, such as a consultation which could take place early next year, and which we will ensure fully engages Cambridge residents to ensure their voices are heard."
