Statement by the Mayor of Cambridge on the situation in the Middle East

Statement by the Mayor of Cambridge Cllr Baiju Thittala at Full Council, 18 July 2024

"As I know my predecessor as Mayor made calls on the situation in the Middle East over the course of the last nine months, I would like to reiterate the call for an immediate ceasefire and a return of the hostages.

"I remain concerned about the state of the conflict in the Middle East and call on leaders across the world to champion peace in this region to save lives and put an end to the bloodshed and negotiate with all parties to come to an amicable settlement of the issue and I urge the international leadership to take the lead to resolve the conflict.

"Cambridge is known as a city of sanctuary, welcoming people from across the world and from a number of diverse backgrounds. As the Mayor of Cambridge and First citizen, I wish all our residents to feel safe within the city."
