Cambridge City Council

Don't forget your photo ID on Thursday 4 July

1 July 2024

Elections take place in Cambridge this Thursday 4 July to elect Members of Parliament for the Cambridge constituency, and for the South Cambridgeshire constituency, which includes Cherry Hinton and Queen Edith’s wards.

There are 40 polling stations for the Cambridge constituency open from 7am until 10pm (see list below). Your polling station is listed on your poll card. It can also be found on the council’s website or by phoning 01223 457048. All polling stations are accessible to people with a mobility or visual disability.

Everyone who registered and is eligible to vote will now have received a poll card – although people do not need their poll card to vote.

This is the first UK General Election at which you will need to show an acceptable form of photo ID to receive a ballot paper and cast your vote in person at a polling station.

A variety of different types of photo ID are acceptable, including passport, driver’s licence, blue badge, older or disabled person’s bus pass, Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) card, the Voter Authority Certificate and many more.

Original documents must be provided, as photocopies or copies of images on mobile phones or other electronic devices will not be accepted. You can bring acceptable photo ID which has expired, so long as the photograph still resembles you.

People arriving at the polling station without acceptable photo ID will be advised to leave the polling station and return with one of the acceptable forms of ID before a ballot paper can be issued to them.

A separate area will be available for people who would like their ID viewed in private and anyone wishing for their ID to be checked by a female member of staff can request this. People wearing face coverings for any reason will be asked to remove them temporarily, but this can be done in private.

The candidates for 4 July in the Cambridge constituency are:

  • Khalid ABU-TAYYEM (Workers Party of Britain)
  • David CARMONA (Independent)
  • Keith GARRETT (Rebooting Democracy)
  • Shane MANNING (Conservative)
  • Sarah NICMANIS (Green)
  • Cheney PAYNE (Liberal Democrat)
  • Daniel ZEICHNER (Labour)

The count for the elections will take place overnight on Thursday-Friday after the polls close, with the results expected to be declared early on Friday morning.

Robert Pollock, Acting Returning Officer for the General Election in Cambridge, said: “Have your say on who you want to represent Cambridge in parliament. If you’re planning to vote at a polling station, don’t forget to bring an acceptable form of photo ID with you.

“I’d urge everyone to use their vote on Thursday and play their part in the country’s democratic process.”
