Voters need to bring photo ID to the polling station to be able to vote in person in the local elections, after new national legislation was introduced ahead of last year’s elections.

A variety of different photo ID can be used to vote, including passport, driver’s licence, blue badge, older or disabled person’s bus pass, Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) card and many more. For the complete list of acceptable forms of ID visit voter ID in polling stations

Anyone without an acceptable ID can apply for a GOV.UK Voter Authority Certificate either online or by post.

This is a free photo ID document issued for the specific purpose of voting at a polling station. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate for the elections on 2 May is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.

Robert Pollock, returning officer for the local elections, said: “Voting in these elections means you will help decide on local councillors to represent your part of Cambridge and help make important decisions about the city.

“If you have moved house recently, are a student and want to vote in Cambridge, or know you are not yet registered, please register by 16 April so you have the option to vote in this year’s local elections. It’s easy and only takes a few minutes.

“Don’t forget to bring your valid photo ID on 2 May and please help spread the word to friends and family about the need to show ID if they’re voting at a polling station. You may have a valid form of photo ID already – but check the list online, and if you don’t, you still have time to apply for your free Voter Authority Certificate.”

Please remember:

  • You should be registered to vote by 11.59pm on Tuesday 16 April.
  • If you know that you are not registered to vote or have moved recently you can register by visiting GOV.UK register to vote. You will need your National Insurance number to hand in order to register.
  • You can apply to vote by post before 5pm on Wednesday 17 April. You don't need photo ID to vote by post, and your postal vote ballot paper will be sent to you before polling day.
  • You can apply to vote by proxy (have someone vote on your behalf) before 5pm on Wednesday 24 April. Your proxy will need to go to your polling station on 4 May and have their own photo ID to vote on your behalf.
  • New rules come into force for the 2 May elections regarding how to return a completed postal vote. If you want to hand deliver your postal vote, you can only do this at the council offices at Mandela House, 4 Regent Street, Cambridge CB2 1BY, or to a polling station in your ward on polling day. Anyone delivering their completed postal vote by hand will be asked to sign a form in the presence of a designated postal vote receipt clerk, meaning you must not put them through the council letter box. Any postal vote returned by hand must be accompanied by a signed form, otherwise it will be rejected under the new rules.
