Councillors agree rolling refurbishment for Park Street Car Park ahead of possible redevelopment

COUNCILLORS yesterday approved a rolling programme of refurbishments for Park Street Car Park, to be carried out while further plans for the possible long term redevelopment of the site are investigated.
Cambridge City Council’s Strategy and Resources Scrutiny Committee approved a five year rolling programme of refurbishments for the multi-storey car park, which is more than 50 years old,
This will be reviewed annually, while the council and its joint venture Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP) with Hill Investment Partnerships explore alternatives including commercial options for the site’s longer term redevelopment. At the same time work will continue with the Greater Cambridge Partnership on a package of measures to reduce city congestion and increase Park and Ride usage.
Detailed analysis will now be carried out to assess the structural condition of the car park, while a programme of immediate repairs previously commissioned by the council will begin soon. These works are anticipated to be delivered while the car park remains open, to ensure disruption is minimised.
CIP previously carried out a study on a possible option of building a new underground car park with council housing and commercial units above it, but this was ruled out last night at Committee owing to viability issues.
Cllr Lewis Herbert, Leader of the Council, said: “The five year rolling refurbishment programme will ensure that an appropriate level of car parking is maintained in a safe environment with limited disruption to customers.
“At the same time, we will continue to further investigate the best possible solution for redeveloping the site, including appropriate future car parking. This will be carried out in parallel to work developing plans to improve public transport and tackle congestion and air quality in the city, including reducing vehicle volumes coming into central Cambridge at peak times.
A report seeking approval of an appropriate option for redevelopment will be presented to a future Strategy and Resources Scrutiny Committee meeting for a decision to proceed with a preferred option.
