Cycling & walking

General information about walking and cycling in Cambridge - see also policy pages

Pushchair Scheme

Cycle into town with the kids, park your bike and borrow a pushchair for free from Park Street Cycle Park

Cambridge has the highest level of cycling in the country with 1 in 4 residents cycling to work.

Being a compact and flat city, cycling and walking are quick, cheap and pollution-free methods of travel. Cycling and walking are also great ways to exercise.

Information on how we promote cycling in Cambridge can be found in the Downloads section of this page.

Initiatives

Cycle Locker Hire

Cycle lockers are ideal for regular commuters to the city centre, and they only cost £10 per month (with a returnable £30 key deposit).

Adult Cycle Training Scheme

The Adult Cycle Training Scheme, run by the County Council, provides one-to-one cycle training and is geared to the needs of each participant, whether it be techniques for riding safely and confidently in traffic, or learning to ride a bike from scratch.

To book, contact the County Council Road Safety Team on 01480 375105 or visit the website.

Shared paths

Cambridge has many shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians

The many paths and pavements designated for cycling in Cambridge require both pedestrians and cyclists to take care and to respect the needs of other users.

Cyclists should always give way to pedestrians and be aware of the effect of inconsiderate behaviour, especially on more vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly or visually impaired.

Safer Routes to School

Safer Routes to School is a County Council initiative that aims to create a safe, healthy environment so that children and young people can travel to and from school by cycling and walking. Contact the County Council Safer Routes to School Project Team on 01480 375105 or visit the website.
