The Historic Environment Team are responsible for the quality of the physical environment of the City.  We aim to conserve the best of what exists, to encourage improvements where they are needed and to promote good planning and design in new development.

The main responsibilities are:

  • Designating Conservation Areas and agreeing Conservation Area Management plans.
  • Advising on the conservation and maintenance of historic buildings. This includes advice to Development Control, a free advice service to members of the public on repairs and alterations, and the awarding of grants.
  • Stewardship of trees in the city, including preparing an arboricultural strategy, managing the existing stock of trees and protecting trees through Tree Preservation Orders.
  • Drawing up development briefs to guide the design and content of future development.
  • Providing design guidance on particular topics, e.g. shop fronts.
  • Working with the County Council to deliver high quality streetscape design projects.
  • Promoting interest in the history of the city and good design through schemes such as the David Urwin Awards and Blue Plaque Scheme.
