Cleaner Cambridge Campaign launches the Big Tidy Up in Cambridge

News release from 1 September 2008

The Cleaner Cambridge Campaign, in partnership with Cambridge City Council, has pledged its support to the biggest litter pick in history.

Keep Britain Tidy launches its "Big Tidy Up" today (Monday 1 September). The aim is to get as many members of the public to carry out a clean up in their local area and help tidy up our country during September.

The nationwide campaign will see an unprecedented month-long blitz on litter. Starting today, thousands of litter picks will take place the length and breadth of the country. So far 6,000 groups have signed up. It's hoped half a million bin-bags of litter will be collected.

If you are fed up with litter in your neighbourhood and want to make the area better then go to www.thebigtidyup.org, which is helping communities get together to tidy up their patch.

To mark the event in Cambridge Marie-Louise Holland, chair of the Cleaner Cambridge Campaign, has undertaken a Big Tidy Up of Histon Road Recreation Ground.

Marie-Louise said:

"Do get in touch with us if you would like to form a neighbourhood group and let us know about the litter hotspots around the city which you would like to help make litter free. The Cleaner Cambridge Campaign ensures that the problems generated by litter are on the agenda all year round."

Dave Coventry, head of Streetscene at the city council, said:

"We recognise Cambridge as a clean city but we can get better by working together to keep it clean."
