Moving between properties

You may be able to move to another council-owned or housing association property

Keys

In certain circumstances, you may be able to move to another council-owned or housing association property.

You can do this in the following ways.

The mutual exchange scheme

You can find someone to swap with by:

  • entering your details on our mutual exchange register or the National Tenant Exchange Register;
  • contacting a tenant on our mutual exchange register or the National Tenant Exchange Register (contact your local housing office for details); or
  • advertising your home in the local paper or local shops.

To carry out a mutual exchange, you must:

  • make sure that the other tenant really wants to swap; and
  • make sure that we and the other tenant's landlord have agreed to the swap.

Transfer scheme

We may be able to help you move to another council or housing association property, for example, if your home is too large or too small for your needs, or if you have a serious medical condition that means you cannot stay in your present home.

However, suitable properties are in short supply, so we may not be able to help you in this way.

We may be able to help with adaptations that enable you to stay in your home.

Contact the adaptations officer or your housing office for information.
